Peggy is a 1 year old Hungarian Vizsla who lives with her three humans in Brooklyn, Wellington. Mireille will take any opportunity to shoot the breeze about their goodest-girl.
How did you come into each other’s lives? We’d been building up to the moment of getting a dog for many years and it took a long time to align the planets. After seeing a Vizsla quite by chance in a documentary I googled “red dog” and so began a deep-dive on what it is to share your life with a “V”. Whilst we knew at this stage in our lives that we wanted a puppy, we also knew that we wanted to get a dog that was ethically bred and it took several years to find a breeder and for a litter to arrive. Peggy came from Jenny Hawthorn in Hamilton who mentored Jan’s dog Pippi having her one and only litter. We nervously drove from Wellington in early April 2021 crossing all limbs that we would pass muster with Jenny & Jan and that they would let us have one of the puppies.
How did you decide on her name? Much like expectant human parents we had a list of names which ballooned to around 50 and then was whittled down. Doris was a close call and would have suited our dopey girl too. However, Peggy won out and then hyphen blue as that was the colour of her collar when she was still with her litter, and the colour of each collar were how Jenny and Jan initially knew which pup was which.
What is Peggy like? She is a big ole dork. Even though we knew well the velcro reputation of Vizslas I don’t think we were quite prepared for how high maintenance they can be. Must. Touch. Human. At. All. Times.
What makes her the goodest girl? She just is filled with unbridled joy and enthusiasm.
What is Peggy’s Favourite walk? We recently went to the wilds of Herbertville and Peggy was truly living her best life running the length of the golden beach chasing seagull shadows. It was incredible to see her really open her legs and just go for days.
Does Peggy have a favourite toy? When she left her home with us Jan gave us a well loved scruffy teddy bear and to this day Peggy will still pull it out. But the real jackpot is when she manages to squirrel away some of our dirty washing, she prances round the house like she has won lotto.
What is Peggy’s favourite thing to do? See above - walk around the house with a dirty sock though she does also enjoy all cheese related activities. We’ve also been lucky enough to work with Jason @WellingtonCanineCoaching on training and Peggy loves the appearance of the clicker and the associated bag of possy-yum. Most recently Jason over-saw our starting to take Peggy out for bike rides. THE BEST FUN.
Where does she sleep? Overnight she sleeps in the main bedroom in her crate on the fluffiest Brooklyn bed and with blankets to cocoon her in. In the day time she follows the sun around the house and loves nothing more than snoozing on the deck when the sun arrives.
What is her most loved noms? Little Miss Cheese monster; she’ll hear the fridge door open from 20 paces and there is nothing she won’t do to get cheese. Including the most incredible throwing of herself to the ground as she does “down”.
Has Peggy had any transgressions? Any and all transgressions are 100% on us but a few notables are digging up the (now paved) back lawn not to mention a few flower beds.
What does Peggy do when you go to work? Peggy goes to the amazing @downwithdogs with Alex and her team and truly has the best time. A big ole paddock filled with woodchips and a bath and a steady stream of folks she can encourage to stroke her. She also joins James & Kristin @kuricompanion for a pack walk once a week and has been on all manner of adventures.
What are Peggy's biggest lols? So many, she makes us laugh on the daily. Her general goofiness is so funny and many hilarious moments stem from her inability to find her 10 year old human when we play hide and seek. It is hard to believe she is a hunting dog but we love our silly girl.
